How to choose a good blue smoky quartz strand
Because the blue is an optical effect, the quality of the body matters more than in a stone that carries flat colour. Look for three things:
- A clear, clean body. The blue reads best floating in transparent quartz. A muddy or grey body dulls the effect; a clear one lets it glow.
- Haze that stays airy, not cloudy. The blue should look like light held in the stone, not like a smear. Airy and luminous is the mark of good material; heavy and opaque is not.
- Blue that moves. Turn the bead. Real scattered-light blue shifts and gathers as the angle changes. A flat, painted-looking blue that never moves is a warning sign.
On hardness and care, it behaves like the rest of the quartz family: Mohs 7, tough enough for daily wear, unaffected by water.
