Compare the two 4 mm necklaces
Both pieces use small, polished beads on a stainless steel wire core, finished with a magnetic clasp. Their shared dimensions keep this choice focused: do you want the continuity of black, or colour and light that vary across golden-brown beads?

What changes in the light
Black onyx can look like a continuous dark line while still catching bright reflections. The polished surface reflects its surroundings, so a highlight can move across a bead as you move. Choosing black does not mean choosing a matt surface.
In jewellery, black onyx commonly refers to black chalcedony. Colour, material identity and treatment are separate aspects of a stone. Our black onyx material and treatment guide explains those distinctions in more detail.
Tiger’s eye adds a different optical feature. Aligned fibrous inclusions within the quartz give rise to chatoyancy: the band of light associated with its cat’s-eye appearance. Its visibility and direction depend on the internal orientation, the cut, the lighting and your viewing angle. The bands across a necklace do not all have to appear equally strong or move together.
That variation is part of what you are choosing. The tiger’s eye guide looks more closely at the material and the light band.
Choose black onyx for a clear, dark outline
Onyx is the direct choice when you already know you want black jewellery. Against a pale top, its colour can make the line of the necklace distinct. With darker clothing, reflections on the polished beads can pick out their rounded surfaces.
Choose it if you want the repeated shape of the small beads and the continuity of their colour to carry the piece. It can provide a dark accent without adding a second colour to an outfit. If the changing gold and brown within tiger’s eye is what keeps drawing your attention, that is a reason to consider the other necklace.
Choose tiger’s eye for warm colour and a moving light band
Choose golden tiger’s eye when you want brown and gold to be visible parts of the necklace’s character. Some angles bring a brighter band forward; others leave more of the brown body in view. You can enjoy that movement without expecting every bead to flash at once.
The warm palette is worth considering alongside colours you already wear. If you like brown against cream, navy or olive, tiger’s eye offers a way to carry that combination into a small bead necklace. Its appeal also depends on enjoying variation between neighbouring beads. For a continuous black outline, onyx remains the closer match.
Make sure the length and form suit you
A 43 cm necklace will sit differently according to neck size and shape. If this is a length you already enjoy wearing, you can concentrate on the colour and light of the two materials. If you want a longer necklace, larger beads or a central pendant, settle that preference first.
Our guide to bead necklace length and bead size helps you relate the measurements to the position and proportions you prefer.
For everyday care, put the necklace on after perfume and cosmetics. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after wearing and store it separately from other jewellery. Open the magnetic clasp when taking it off, without pulling on the beads.
Frequently asked questions
Q1. Does black onyx reflect light?
Yes. Polished black onyx can catch bright surface highlights. Its black body colour and the reflections on its surface are separate parts of its appearance.
Q2. Will every tiger’s eye bead show the same light band?
The band’s visibility and direction can vary between beads and with the lighting and viewing angle. A necklace should not be expected to show an identical band across every bead at once.
Q3. Do these two necklaces have the same bead size and length?
Both have 4 mm beads and a length of 43 cm.
Q4. Are these necklaces strung on elastic?
No. Both use a stainless steel wire core and a magnetic clasp. Open the clasp to put the necklace on or take it off.
