In one paragraphStore crystal bracelets by material, not by appearance. Three rules cover almost everything: keep softer stones (moonstone, obsidian, kyanite) separated so harder stones don’t scratch them; keep light-sensitive stones (amethyst, rose quartz, smoky quartz) out of prolonged direct sunlight so the colour doesn’t fade; and lay elastic-cord strands flat rather than hanging them, so the cord doesn’t stay under tension and stretch.

Storage is a materials question because the same shelf treats different stones differently — a Mohs-5 obsidian bead and a Mohs-7 quartz bead in the same pouch means the quartz wins and the obsidian scuffs.

This guide gives the storage logic, a by-stone chart, elastic-cord care, and the common mistakes.

Why storage is a material question

Two material properties decide how a bracelet should be stored. Hardness (Mohs) decides what can scratch what — a harder bead will abrade a softer one if they rub, so mixed-hardness storage scuffs the soft stones. Light sensitivity decides whether colour survives — stones coloured by a radiation-activated colour centre (amethyst, smoky quartz) or by certain inclusions can fade under prolonged UV. A third, practical factor is the stringing: most bracelets sit on elastic cord, which stretches and ages faster under constant tension.

Storage by stone type

Stone Mohs Light-sensitive? Storage note
Obsidian 5–5.5 No Softest here — store separately, away from quartz; scratches easily
Moonstone 6–6.5 No Soft, cleaves — separate pouch, avoid knocks
Kyanite 4.5–7 No Variable hardness, bladed — store apart, handle gently
Amethyst 7 Yes Keep out of prolonged direct sun
Rose quartz 7 Mild Out of strong sun to be safe
Smoky quartz 7 Yes Colour is irradiation-based — keep out of strong sun
Citrine 7 Mild Out of sustained heat and strong sun
Garnet / Hematoid / Rutilated 6.5–7+ No Stable; still store apart from softer stones

The pattern: the soft stones need physical separation; the quartz family needs shade.

Elastic cord care

  • Lay flat, don’t hang. Hanging keeps the cord under tension, which accelerates stretch.
  • Don’t over-stretch on and off. Roll the bracelet over the hand rather than yanking it.
  • Keep away from oils and heat. Lotions, perfume and heat degrade elastic over time.
  • Expect to re-string eventually. Elastic is a wear part; a high-quality strand is built to be re-strung, not thrown away.

Reading your storage setup

  • One bracelet, one compartment. Soft dividers or individual pouches prevent bead-on-bead scratching.
  • Out of the window. A drawer or box beats an open dish on a sunny shelf for light-sensitive stones.
  • Dry, stable temperature. Avoid bathrooms (humidity) and sunny windowsills (heat and UV).
  • Flat, not hanging. Protects the elastic cord.
  • Travel: wrap individually. A soft roll or separate pouches stop stones knocking in a bag.

Common mistakes

  • A shared pouch for everything. Mixed hardness means the soft stones lose. Separate them.
  • A sunny shelf display. Looks lovely, slowly fades amethyst and smoky quartz.
  • Hanging strands on hooks. Convenient, but stretches elastic cord.
  • Bathroom storage. Humidity and temperature swings are hard on cord and some stones.

How BE. thinks about storage

Every strand ships with a Stone Origin Card that records the stone’s hardness and colour mechanism — which is exactly the information that tells you how to store it. The Crystal 4T grade (Transparency, Tone, Texture, Treasure) describes the material so the care is never guesswork: a Tone built on a colour centre means “keep out of sun”, a softer Texture means “store apart”.

Frequently asked questions

Q1.How should I store crystal bracelets?

By material: soft stones (obsidian, moonstone) separated so they don’t scratch, light-sensitive stones (amethyst, smoky quartz) out of direct sun, and elastic strands laid flat rather than hung.

Q2.Can I keep all my bracelets together?

Not loose in one pouch — mixed hardness means harder beads scratch softer ones. Use soft dividers or individual pouches.

Q3.Which crystals are light-sensitive?

Amethyst and smoky quartz most of all, with rose quartz and citrine worth keeping out of strong sun too. Garnet, hematoid and rutilated quartz are colour-stable.

Q4.Does elastic cord wear out?

Yes — it’s a wear part. Lay strands flat, avoid constant tension and oils, and re-string when it loosens.

Q5.Do I need to seal them away?

No — a dry drawer or box out of direct sun, with individual compartments, is plenty.

Q6.How should I pack them for travel?

Wrap each bracelet individually in a soft roll or separate pouches so beads don’t knock together in a bag.
