How it formed
About 1.75 billion years ago, the crust in what is now the state of Bahia, in north-eastern Brazil, began to pull apart. Volcanoes erupted along the rift. Their rock set into what geologists now call the Novo Horizonte Formation.
That rock stayed in the crust for well over a billion years and was later deformed. Then, around 500 million years ago, water carrying silica and titanium moved through cracks in it. Where conditions in the water changed, minerals came out of it onto the walls, and the cracks filled into veins. The oldest known spores of land plants are some twenty to thirty million years younger than these veins.
In one vein a needle of rutile grew first, titanium and oxygen drawn out thin and golden brown. Quartz began on the wall beside it. Its faces advanced across the opening, reached the needle and grew on past it, and the needle stayed where it lay, sealed inside clear quartz.
In other crystals the needles lengthened while the quartz grew around them. One needle crossed a clear patch on its own. Elsewhere, finer needles gathered into a spray.
In 2018 Mário Chaves and colleagues dated a quartz vein in the Novo Horizonte Formation, near the town of Novo Horizonte, where rutilated quartz is mined. They measured the uranium and lead in xenotime, a phosphate mineral that grew in the vein, and got three ages: about 504, 493 and 492 million years. Those measurements date minerals in the studied vein; they do not establish how long an individual quartz crystal grew.
A 2017 GIA report described about 2,500 miners in the region around Remédios, in Novo Horizonte, where golden rutilated quartz was mined.
Cutting starts with a rough piece chosen for its needles. It is rounded, drilled and polished. Quartz is about 7 on the Mohs scale and rutile about 6 to 6.5. Each bead holds a different part of the crystal: a dense spray in one, a few long lines in another, a fine fracture in a third.
How to look at yours
Golden to brown needles cross the clear quartz of each bead. Some gather into dense sprays; elsewhere a single line runs from one side to the other. As the wrist turns, different needles catch the light. Each is a crystal of rutile, held where the quartz grew around it.
The golden rutilated quartz in our strands comes from Brazil and is untreated. Each strand comes with a Stone Origin Record.
One way to read it
One way to read this: golden rutilated quartz is two minerals in one stone. The needles are rutile, titanium oxide, and the clear body around them is quartz. In some pieces the rutile formed first and the quartz grew around it; in others the two grew together. Either way each kept its own chemistry. It is valued as one stone, and it holds two minerals at once.
Eyes open, still in love. The meaning is yours.
