Which crystals fade in sunlight, and which don't?

Read the table by the last two columns. If a stone's colour comes from a colour centre, treat sunlight as something to manage. If its colour comes from an included mineral or from the crystal structure, you can wear it in daylight without a second thought.

Why do some crystals fade?

A colour centre is a tiny flaw in the crystal lattice — usually an iron atom sitting where it shouldn't, switched into a particular electrical state by natural background radiation over geological time. That state is what absorbs certain wavelengths and lets the violet of amethyst or the brown of smoky quartz through. It works because the state is stable at room temperature over ordinary human timescales.

Ultraviolet light is strong enough to nudge some of those iron atoms back out of that state. Under months of direct sun, the colour drifts toward grey or pale yellow as more of them reset. Stones that hold their colour store it differently. Hematoid quartz is red because it has iron-oxide minerals trapped inside the silica; rutilated quartz shows gold needles of rutile; green phantom quartz has chlorite sealed in layers. Those are physical inclusions, not electrical states, and light does nothing to them. Garnet's iron sits locked in a dense, stable framework rather than a colour centre, which is why a garnet holds its deep red through decades of wear.

Is a faded crystal ruined?

No. A stone that has softened in colour has done something that other materials people love do too.

Raw denim starts out dark and stiff and, over a couple of years, fades exactly where the body creases it — the knees, the seat, the line where a wallet sits. Nobody calls that damage. It is the reason people buy raw denim in the first place: the fabric records the person who wore it. Leather does the same. A good pair of boots or a plain leather watch strap darkens and softens with use, and that surface — the patina — is prized, not repaired. The mark of use is the point.

A colour-centre stone worn in daylight for years is on the same path. The violet that softens or the brown that lightens is a record of the light the stone lived in on a particular wrist. You can prevent it if you want to — keep the bracelet out of long, direct sun and it stays as it arrived. But if it does drift, that isn't a loss. How to slow it down, if you want to

Preventing fade is simple and costs nothing. It is about light exposure, not everyday daylight — a walk in the sun does no measurable harm; a summer spent on a bright windowsill does.

  • Don't store it in the light. The damage is cumulative, so where a bracelet spends its off hours matters more than the hour it is worn. A drawer, a pouch or a box keeps the clock stopped. See how to store crystal bracelets.
  • Skip the sunlit ledge. Leaving a colour-centre stone on a windowsill for weeks is the single most common way people fade amethyst without meaning to.
  • Dry in shade. If a bracelet has been in water, dry it on a cloth out of direct sun. A wet stone left to dry in strong light is harder on the colour than either on its own.
  • It only matters for the fade group. Garnet, hematoid, rutilated, clear quartz and the rest can sit in daylight indefinitely.
