### Four readings, each scored 1 to 5
1 and 2 are below standard. 3 = Standard. 4 = Strong. 5 = Exceptional. Product pages and the Stone Origin Record show the word, not the number.
A reading word describes one property of one stone (Standard / Strong / Exceptional). A tier name describes the finished piece (Studio / Signature / Heritage). A piece is never called Strong; a reading is never called Signature.

### Transparency (T1)
The degree to which light passes through the bead, and the visibility of internal features. Read with the unaided eye at wearing distance (about 40 cm) against a white card under daylight-balanced light; 10x only confirms.
- 5 Exceptional: light passes freely; no clouding or fracturing visible at wearing distance; under 10x internal features absent or minor
- 4 Strong: slight clouding difficult to see at wearing distance, confirmed under 10x

### Tone (T2)
Colour at two levels: the single bead (saturation and depth of its own hue) and the whole strand (consistency bead to bead). Each variety is judged against its own natural colour; a naturally deep and a naturally light colour can both score 5.
- 5 Exceptional: saturation vivid, the full colour of the variety; depth even; no variation between beads visible at wearing distance
- 4 Strong: saturation strong; slight variation between beads difficult to see at wearing distance

### Texture (T3)
The condition of the finished bead: polish, drill holes, roundness, and match of diameter across the strand. Read under 10x, confirmed with the unaided eye.
- 5 Exceptional: no pits, scratches or drill-hole chipping under 10x; beads uniform in roundness and diameter
- 4 Strong: minor pits or chipping difficult to see under 10x and not visible to the eye
- 3 Standard: minor polishing faults noticeable under 10x but not to the eye; slight variation in diameter may be present
- 2 or 1: dull patches, grinding marks, rough drill holes, fractures or chips visible to the eye — REJECTED

### Treasure (T4)
How difficult the material is to obtain at this quality, in this bead size and colour. Assigned from BE.'s supply record for the variety, size and colour, not from the individual strand. Source and treatment are recorded on the Stone Origin Record as facts and are not scored.
- 5 Exceptional: supply depends on a particular find; when a lot sells out the same quality may not be available for years, or at all
- 4 Strong: uncommon; only a small part of each parcel reaches this standard, or few sources supply it; restocking takes time and is not guaranteed
- 3 Standard: restocked within a normal buying cycle
- 2 or 1: commodity material, or not stocked by BE.

### Rejection
A stone that scores 2 or below on Transparency, Tone or Texture is rejected. It is not made up and is not sold under a lower tier.

### Tiers (the lowest material reading decides)
The tier follows the lowest of Transparency, Tone and Texture. Treasure never lowers a tier; it matters only for Heritage.
- Studio: the lowest material reading is 3 (Standard)
- Signature: the lowest material reading is 4 (Strong)
